Post Updated (9th July, 2010): Now "Stats" is an integral part of Blogger.
If you haven't used Blogger in Draft (Beta-Blogger) till now, then do it right away. It is where, Blogger releases all its new features before officially adding the services to Blogger blogs. To access Blogger in Draft, instead of logging in to www.Blogger.com log in at draft.Blogger.com
The latest Beta add-on from Blogger is a "Stats" section in the Dashboard - to monitor and analyze your visitor traffic in near-real-time.
Tracking your visitors' activity on your blog is an important part of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). So, if you haven't yet accessed the "Stats" section of your Blogger-account - then do it right now. And as of now "Blogger Stats" is relatively new and limited in terms of the information these tools provide, so even now I advise everyone to sign up at the below mentioned websites/services, start tracking to give your visitors what they want (that's what SEO is all about)...
You would have seen many fancy and flashy visitor counters in hundreds or rather thousands of blogs, but simply counting the number of visitors or page views is totally of no use to any blogger or webmaster. Visitor-Tracking is a much more advanced and useful method as compared to those simple counters.
So here's a list of important tracking websites, providing free and fabulous features to all the bloggers...

And as of now "Blogger Stats" is relatively new and limited in terms of the information these tools provide, so even now I advise everyone to sign up at the below mentioned websites/services, start tracking to give your visitors what they want (that's what SEO is all about)...

So here's a list of important tracking websites, providing free and fabulous features to all the bloggers...
The tracking reports and statistics from these websites mainly contain:
1. Of course, unique visits & page views, averaged and archived to weekly, monthly and yearly graphs. (And all the reports are in real time)
2. You can also view the details like, visitors IP addresses, time spent by them browsing your website, pages visited, and their returning visits. Moreover, you can even check the operating system your visitor is using, their screen resolution, their browser with version and whether Java or Flash is enabled on their system or not.
3. And the most important statistical-reports for you are of course related to Search Engine Optimization (SEO); these include the keywords through which they entered your site, list of search engines which referred visitors to your website.
You can easily track the activities of your visitors for completely FREE, by placing simple JavaScripts on your blog provided by websites like StatCounter and Google. Statcounter gives a simple script, which when placed in to your template starts collecting all the above mentioned information, which is then displayed to you. The stats are simple to browse-through and understand. Using these stats you can improve your blogs structure & content. You should also focus and improve the important posts of your blog which bring maximum traffic to you.

The most important tracking site of course belongs to Google. Being a blogger you cannot afford to miss this one: Google Analytics. Although it may take a little more time to understand all the statistical data displayed at G-Analytics completely and even more time to analyse the data and use it to effectively plan your SEO strategies, but being a Google product it will not only provide complete tracking details as provided by other similar services, but it does help a lot in Search engine optimization (SEO) too.
In Statcounter, to get some of the advanced features, including an increase in log size, a paid account or an upgrade is needed, but at Google-Analytics everything is free, rather they even have an advanced beta section for interested members.
And finally a must for everybody is an account in Google Webmaster Tools, where you have to simply submit your websites sitemap to access the most important SEO details.
The stats shown by GWT are not directly about your visitors, but are
You can see the number of pages indexed by Google, pages/articles deleted by you, pages restricted for Google. And you can even see how many website/webpages around the Internet have linked to your website (and to which specific page). How well are your internal pages are connected. And again, one of the most important, you will be shown how many pages of your website has high, medium, low or no PageRank.
So finally I will suggest you to get an account in:
(1) Google Analytics, (2) Google Webmaster Tools and (3) Statcounter

And just for fun, if you want to know how many people are online on your website at a time (real time), then put a widget from Amung.us, that doesn't even need you to register :)

Write commentsGostats is a stats system that you seem to have missed. I would say it trumps the lot
ReplyI have intentionally left it, the only advantage in gostats is it's simple user interface, but the problem is the features offered by it are more or less similar to statcounter rather it shows many of the common features, only to the upgraded members !
ReplyHi Divya I have 7 links restricted by robots.txt. The links represent labels for my second article. What should I do to fix them?
ReplyLabels are purposely blocked(by default) in blogger, this is done to make sure that the content is not indexed twice by Google-bot.
ReplyBecause if you go to that blocked tag page, you'll again see the same content (your own posts) with different urls (tags urls),
this may be considered as duplicate content by google......(Google penalizes for duplicate content)
so to prevent this tags are not allowed to get indexed by robots.
You can read these posts:
1. Show only titles in your Blog archives pages
2. WWW or non-WWW
Read the first comment too, in the first suggested post...
ReplyI just nominated you. Thank you for all the tips. Check out my blog at http://jmjfamily6.blogspot.com, and perhaps be my mentor on this social networking thingy. You could tell I'm a newbie ... lol! Hey, I'm really open to suggestions on how to improve my site.
ReplyHey Joey,

ReplyThanks for the nomination. I just visited your blog, you got a nice template for a family-blog
But the labels widget at the bottom is quite lengthy and it may annoy your visitors, so I would recommend you to replace it with a tag-cloud widget. Your header image is cool, but it should be centered properly.
hi Divya Sai..
Replyi follow your post about how to optimize blog one by one..
it really helpfull..
but would you mind to see my noob blog and tell me what should i do to improve it?
it would be an honour for me
You are most welcome Aieleen!
Replyyou have a great blog too, but I think your sign in and sign up links aren't linked to the correct sites..and also I found that you are using auromatic read-more hack in your blog, I do not recommend this, I am soon going to publish a post with detials on this topic(correct way to truncate posts). Your content and rate of updating your blog is really good. Keep up the work ...happy blogging.
Sai, your recommendation on StatCounter is right on! I've done 2 other blogs in Typepad and Wordpress. I thought WP's plugin was way better than Typepad's standard tracker, which is not even adequate (to be nice). But after watching StatCounter for two weeks I can say it puts Wordpress's tracker to shame! Thanks for the info
ReplyMost of the sites and blog, I have, I have incorporated the statscounter. Thank you for your detailed article/ Love your work.
ReplyTina.
Great site! i'm learning "proper" blogging...
Replyhey sai, your newfound fan, elizabeth again. i'm going to take a cue from two others before me and request a visit from you to my site. any suggestions from an expert would be most humbly appreciated.

Sure, I'll be visiting your blog soon
Replywow! great site that give a lot of information.
ReplyI didn't know about the "Google Analytics".. Thanks man!!! Great blog!
ReplyGoogle Analitics may be a bit complicated for ordinary users. I prefer built in cpanel ofmy hosting company.
ReplyYeah initially it may look a bit complicated, but once you get the hold on it, it'll be easy and addictive too
ReplyTry using both Analytics and Google Webmaster tools.
To start with an easy site, I would suggest Statcounter.
Thank you for the recommendation, so I analyzed the statcounter and I can say that's pretty good, and I recommend it to all those who are beginners
ReplyI will use this super feature as soon as this feature launched!
Replyi love stat counter....i had for my one of my blog.....but now i think google blogger has officially launched stats counter for bloggers....its great......http://topblogger1.blogspot.com/
ReplyYou said it right Divya, G. Analytics is the best tracking tool in its class. Besides 'Analytics' I use Sitemeter on my blog DiGi-PASSION. Sitemeter is another great tool providing detailed stats over several different parameters.
ReplyAny way, thanks for sharing

Hi Divya,

ReplyIt has been easy way to track the visitors form Blogger's real time dashboard. But, we can't track all visitors deeply. Thats why we have to use some external tracking system
BTW, I have created the Recent Post widget which is based on Google API. Here is it: Recent Post widget for Blogger Using Google API. I am sure you'll like it
Thanks Divya for all of your contribution
Regards,
Anup
