Numbering Comments In Blogger/BlogSpot Blogs

Here comes the first Blogger tutorial in year 2010 on BloggerStop. This Blogger hack will add numbers against all the comments in your blog. And each number will be linked to that unique comment. You/your readers can use these numbers and corresponding links to mention or point a particular comment on any of your posts.
Numbering Comments In Blogger

Working Demo - Hot Orange Blogger Template.

Instructions To Follow:
STEP #1
Log in to Blogger, go to Layout -> Edit HTML
and mark the tick box "Expand Widget Templates"

STEP #2
Now find (CTRL+F) this code in the template:
<b:loop values='data:post.comments' var='comment'>
Immediately ABOVE/BEFORE that, paste this code:
<script type='text/javascript'>var CommentsCounter=0;</script> <!--COMM-NUM-STARTS-->
Now find this code:
<data:commentPostedByMsg/>
And immediately BELOW/AFTER it, paste this code:
<!--COMM-NUM-STARTS-->
<span class='comm-num'>
<a expr:href='data:comment.url' title='Comment Link'>
<script type='text/javascript'>
CommentsCounter=CommentsCounter+1;
document.write(CommentsCounter)
</script>
</a>
</span>
<!--COMMNUM-STOPS-->
And save the template. Now you will see numbers in front of all the comments in your blog. But they are not well styled.

STEP #3
So now we will style these numbers to match your blogs theme.
GO back to the page Layout -> Edit HTML
and find (CTRL+F) this code in the template:
</head>
And immediately ABOVE/BEFORE it paste this code:
<!--COMM-NUM-STARTS-->
<style type="text/css">
.comm-num a:link, .comm-num a:visited {
color: white !important;
text-decoration: none !important;
background: url(http://i50.tinypic.com/egx3t3.jpg) no-repeat;
width: 50px;
height: 48px;

float: right;
display: block;
margin-right: 5px;
margin-top: -15px; /*comments-counter position*/
text-align: center;
font-family: 'Century Gothic','Lucida Grande',Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif;
font-size: 15px;
font-weight: normal;
}

.comm-num a:hover, .comm-num a:active {
color: gray !important;
text-decoration: none !important;
}
</style>
<!--COMM-NUM-STOPS-http://bloggerstop.net-->
Edit the above code (highlighted in RED) to change the image.
And edit the code (highlighted in BLUE) to change the color of the numbers.

Images you may use (Right-Click and select "Copy Image Address/Location"):

IMPORTANT: You may use any image instead of the one linked in the code above (STEP #3), but you have to mention its dimensions correctly (width and height) for correct placement of numbers on the image.

Finally save the template and count your comments...

@P.T.
I couldn't find the code in your template. Leave the code as it is, so that I can it for errors. BTW ...nice template.

@Анна
Thanks. If you are using some other icon (when I checked your blog, it was blue bubbles icon), then make sure you also change the dimensions (width and height)-For that blue bubbles icon dimensoins are 55x53 (55-width & 53-height).

@Magali
Out of these two lines:
<dl id='comments-block'>
<b:loop values='data:post.comments' var='comment'>

If first one's not there in your template, then find only the second line, and paste that code (in red) just above it.

This is a great idea. I have numbers on my comments but no images yet (my choice right now).

You can adjust how high the number are by changing the -15 in the command margin-top: -15px;

I believe I adjusted mine to be -23px.

Great job with the coding!!

Thanks for adding that point Kristy.
So as mentioned by Kristyanna, if you want to adjust the position of the icon+number, then change the values against margin-right and margin-top. Also you can change the font-size of these numbers.
And, to make the numbers bold, change this:
font-weight: normal;
to this:
font-weight: bold;

The overall code will look similar to this in your blog (code varies from template to template), the bolded part of the code is what you to add:

<a expr:name='data:comment.anchorName'/>
<b:if cond='data:comment.authorUrl'>
<a expr:href='data:comment.authorUrl' rel='nofollow'><data:comment.author/></a>
<b:else/>
<data:comment.author/>
</b:if>
<data:commentPostedByMsg/>
<!--COMMNUM-STARTS-->
<span class='comm-num'>
<a expr:href='data:comment.url' title='Comment Link'>
<script type='text/javascript'>
CommentsCounter=CommentsCounter+1;
document.write(CommentsCounter)
</script>
</a>
</span>
<!--COMMNUM-STOPS-->

</dt>

Reply

Well no Reza, it will not at all add any significant load to our blogs html. its just a single image of hardly 2/3kb which is repeated in all the comments, so it doesn't mean that for 200 comments you reader/any one is going to download the 200 images, the query for download is sent only once, and due the code the image will be displayed 200 times.

Reply

That pop-up is not a page from your blog, rather if you check the url of the pop up you'll notice that it's a blogger.com page. So this hack can never be shown there.
I would advise you to embed your comment-form in your blog itself:

I finally have numbered comments back on my blog. Now I just need to find an image that is more in keeping with my blog to use as the comment icon.

Ok, for anyone interested in knowing, I figured out why it wasn't working in IE but was in Firefox, at least for me. Apparently, you have to go under Settings, then Comments. You have to choose NO to showing profile pictures. I don't know why, but that's what finally worked for me. So that's what finally worked (in case someone out there runs into the same issue). Hope that helps!

to this:

background: url(http://oi50.tinypic.com/2ltho36.jpg) no-repeat #ADD8E6;

Sorry forget to mention that, you have to maintain a minimum height of 65 pixels in your comments boxes. Add this code to do that:

Hmm although you have done most of the steps right, but either make the font size smaller (to 15px from 25 px)
or change this value:

margin-top: -15px; /*comments-counter position*/
text-align: center;

to this:

margin-top: -5px; /*comments-counter position*/
text-align: center;

Hope that works, do tell me...

Dear Sal~
I have tried several times to install your code, but still can't see any numbers. But I'm wondering if it's because my template has the little avatar images on the right side already? Is there any way you could help me figure this out? I'd really like to know how to make regular numbers inside a simple black circle show up on the left side instead of the right, if possible?

Okay, forget what I said about putting the numbers on the left! LOL Is there a way to move my avatar pics to the left and then can see the numbers on the right side? *Ü*

Hello there,

I can see the number-bubbles in your blog. The black clouds with numbers in them. Glad you fixed the problem yourself :)

In your blog, I can see the avatar images in the left and number bubbles in the right - just the way it should be...
Wait a minute I'll show you a screenshot of your blog...you can get it verified by your friends.

My numbers are showing up twice - that is, in one place all of the odd numbers, and the same comment is also marked with the consecutive even numbers. What do I do?

My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find many of your post’s to be exactly what I’m looking for. can you offer guest writers to write content for yourself? I wouldn’t mind composing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write regarding here. Again, awesome website!

Thanks so much...like others have said, I've tried other hacks and none of them have worked until yours. Bravo!

I do have one problem...the image is cut off on the right margin. I noticed that someone else had mentioned in the comments that they had the same problem, but I never saw a fix for it.

Can you help?

Thanks,
Pam

I couldn't get this to work, at least with the first part of the code.
And, after I save template is it supposed to show numbering on previous posts or only on posts added after code added?
For the second part, I don't want to use any image, what can I do instead?
I have reverted back to the original template for now. Will make changes & add numbering after I receive your reply & clarifications.
Thanks so much!

This didn't work for me either. Tried it twice. I know last year I did this but it was waayyy easier. Just had to put in numeric fields in certain places. It wasn't this difficult. Don't know why it didn't work for me.

Hi, I tried adding this code, but it is not working for me. In fact, I used to have numbered comments as recently as 3 weeks ago, but they disappeared on me one day and I have not been able to get them back. Do you think Blogger has done done something or did I mess it up somehow?
Thanks for your help ~Jamie

I just realized, maybe my numbered comments disappeared when blogger rolled out the threaded comments... Anyway, not having numbered comments makes it hard to host giveaways. I had to count mine manually this am. Luckily there were only 35...

Oh no! I tried this and now I do have numbers, but it's skipping numbers...first comment says 1, second says 4, third says 7, etc...so even though I only have 16 comments, it says the bottom one is 46! Anyway you can offer help? Happy to email you my template code if that would help!

I had used your tutorial successfully, but my numbered comments disappeared. I've tried to go back in and verify your code is in my blog, but still can't get the numbered comments to appear. Sure wish I could figure out why.
